Large Cone/Race Car Doors

Large Cone /Race Car Doors is an installation pairing 4 (welded together) race car doors with a large transparent painted plexiglas cone. These items are to be suspended from the ceiling of the new lobby space of the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. The installation will be hung as a mobile, which will allow the art work to gently move, lending a dimensional aspect to the work and the space. The simple 2 element structure of the work will respect and energize the vast beautiful and visually neutral space of the lobby.

The 2 elements of the work were chosen because of the nature of the Tilles Center itself. The intention is to create an intellectually and visually stimulating situation for visitors to the Tilles Center. Basic perception begins with discerning difference between given elements such as sound, visual information, smell etc..., and an interesting situation is one that challenges, even if for a millisecond, the intellects sense of normality. The audiences at the Tilles Center typically arrive to hear well organized sound in the form of a concert. In order to provide them with an interesting experience, I am proposing a reference to the non organized sound of a race track, in the form of race car doors. This is the conceptual relevance of racing in the case, the visual relevance is the very bright graphic nature of the car doors in relation to the austere space of the lobby. Because the lobby is relatively passive visually, I am tempering the situation of the art work with a very different structure than the the race car doors, a very large cone shape. The cone will be transparent and have more muted earth tone colors painted out and inside of it so as to resemble my paintings. The cone will be painted in such a manner so as to behave like a muti faceted stained glass window that moves around in space.

The differences between the race car door structure and the large cone will function as an interesting poetic situation which will negate any political or otherwise literal possible interpretations of this work. The intended focus is on the differences between the 2 elements so as to function like a refined interesting situation. The inherent differences between the building housing the work and the art work itself becomes a second generation of intellectual consideration while viewing and/or thinking of this work.

The aspect of this work that will function for most people is the profound beauty of it. The bright colored doors sculpted together into an oddly interesting gullwing shape, paired with a large glowing stained glass like cone. The work is completed by the fact that the whole work has a gentle movement creates interaction in real time with it's 2 elements and stimulates the space of the Tilles Center lobby. Large Cone/Race Car Doors will, I guarantee, leave a positive lasting impression on those that experience it.
